Deals damage. If the target is holding an item and the user is not, the user will permanently take the item. Damage is still inflicted if an item cannot be taken. If the Pokémon has a Mega Stone, Z-Crystal, Pokémon specific item (e.g. Multitype or Wellspring Mask) or Sticky Hold ability thief cannot steal the item.

If Focus Band would activate from the damage inflicted by Thief, it will activate first and then be stolen.
