Pokémon Natures Explained
A Pokémon's nature plays a significant role in its growth and battle performance. Each Nature influences two of a Pokémon's five base stats: Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. One stat will be increased by 10%, and another will be decreased by 10%. There are 25 Natures, five of which are neutral and do not influence any stats (The Diagonal grey ones in the Chart). Understanding Natures and how they influence stats is crucial for competitive battling and team building.
Individual Values (IVs)
Individual Values (IVs) are like a Pokémon's innate genetic potential. Each of the six stats of a Pokémon (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed) contains an IV, and that IV is an number from 0 to 31. The values are randomly set when a Pokémon is generated (i.e., when you catch it from the wild or hatch an Egg) and don't change during the lifetime of the Pokémon. Higher IVs in a particular stat mean that Pokémon will also possess a higher capability in that stat compared to another Pokémon with the same level and species but with lower IVs.
Effort Values (EVs)
Fighting other Pokémon earns you Effort Values (EVs). A Pokémon gains a specific number of EVs in particular stats for every Pokémon it defeats. A Pokémon can have a maximum of 252 EVs per stat and 510 EVs overall. At level 100, EVs directly boost a Pokémon's stats; a stat gains one point for every four EVs in it. You can tailor your Pokémon's abilities to suit particular team roles through strategic EV training.
Synergy of Natures, IVs, and EVs
For competitive Pokémon battles it is essential to take into account how a Pokémon's Nature, IVs, and EVs interactt. A nature that increases the stats you plan to concentrate on through EV training and high IVs in those crucial areas is ideal. For instance, a physical attacker may gain from high Attack and Speed IVs, a spread of EVs that further improves Attack and Speed, and an Adamant Nature (increases Attack, decreases Sp. Atk). Raising powerful and successful Pokémon requires an understanding of and strategic application of these three components.
