Pokémon X & Y – Kalos Region, Mega Evolution & 3D Revolution
Released worldwide on October 12, 2013, Pokémon X and Y debuted the main series on Nintendo 3DS with full 3D graphics and environments.
Introduced the France-inspired Kalos region, adding 72 new Pokémon for a total of 721.
Generation VI introduced Mega Evolution — a temporary in-battle transformation for select Pokémon — and the new Fairy type.
Brought major online upgrades, including the Player Search System (PSS), Wonder Trade, and Super Training.
🌟 A leap into 3D
Pokémon X and Y were the first mainline entries built for the Nintendo 3DS, transitioning the series into fully 3D models and environments. Set in the France‑inspired Kalos region, they offered a visually rich world with landmarks like Lumiose City’s Prism Tower.
🆕 New Pokémon & Fairy type
These games introduced 72 new species, including the starters Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, and the legendaries Xerneas (X) and Yveltal (Y). The Fairy type — the first new type since Generation II — rebalanced the type chart, countering Dragon types and refreshing battle strategies.
⚡ Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution temporarily transforms certain Pokémon mid‑battle when holding their specific Mega Stone, boosting stats and sometimes changing abilities or types. It lasts until the battle ends and can be used once per battle, adding a dramatic strategic layer.
💖 Pokémon-Amie
This feature let Trainers pet, feed, and play with their Pokémon, boosting affection and unlocking in‑battle perks like increased critical hits or surviving with 1 HP.

🌐 Online innovations
The Player Search System (PSS) streamlined multiplayer, enabling instant battles and trades. Wonder Trade allowed random global exchanges, while Super Training offered a hands‑on way to raise EVs.
⚔️ New battle formats
Sky Battles restricted combat to Flying‑type or Levitate‑ability Pokémon, while Horde Encounters pitted Trainers against five wild Pokémon at once. Breeding and shiny hunting were also refined for accessibility.
🧢 Trainer customization
For the first time, players could change their Trainer’s clothing, accessories, and hairstyle, adding personal flair to their journey.
🌍 A global launch
X and Y were the first Pokémon games to release simultaneously worldwide, underscoring the franchise’s global reach. Their innovations set the stage for future 3D titles and inspired later mechanics like regional forms.
Mega Evolution lets Trainers temporarily transform select Pokémon into more powerful forms, revitalizing classic species and deepening battle strategy.

The Kalos region spans bustling cities, serene countrysides, ancient ruins, and dense forests. Sky Battles and Horde Encounters added fresh twists to exploration and combat.
