What are Pokémon BREAK cards
Unique horizontal card type that evolves from and augments the abilities of its previous evolution.
Distinctive gold border and partial artwork that overlays onto the Pokémon it's evolving from.
Maintains the attacks and Pokémon Power of the previous stage while adding new attacks or abilities.
Pull rates of BREAK cards are approximately 1 out of 18 packs (about 5.5%) from sets which contain them.
Introduced in the XY series with the release of the BREAKthrough expansion set in November 2015, the Pokémon BREAK cards are a special evolution mechanic put onto horizontal cards that overlay onto the Pokémon's previous evolution.
BREAK cards are easily recognized with their gold borders and partial artwork that takes up about half the card so a player can see the card underneath.
The cards are considered to be of higher rarity than regular holofoils but not as rare as ultra-rare cards, hence being an attractive target for collectors.
In game play, a BREAK card is played on top of its corresponding fully evolved Pokémon, retaining the attacks and Pokémon Power of the previous stage while adding new attacks or abilities.
The mechanic also offers some interesting strategic opportunities, since it does, in effect, make a more powerful form of the Pokémon without counting against the additional evolutions.
They were featured in a few XY series sets that included BREAKthrough, BREAKpoint, and Steam Siege. With the introduction of BREAK cards, an all-new dimension came into play regarding the strategy and collecting part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, shedding new light on the evolution of Pokémon.
Although BREAK cards are no longer in current sets, they prove to be one of the more memorable and important parts of Pokémon TCG history due to their unique design and the way they play.
